Digital cameras are being incorporated into almost every conceivable device—cell phones, PDAs, MP3 players, handheld computers, and laptops. As a result, consumers are digitizing and sharing images at unprecedented rates on sites such as Photobucket and Flickr. In addition, museums and institutions such as the Smithsonian, the National Archives, and the Library of Congress are making digitized archives of images available to schools.

This offers the opportunity to turn digital cameras and shared online images into powerful tools for learning. Tech-savvy teachers can use digital images in a variety of innovative ways—for data acquisition in science class, visualization in mathematics class, digital storytelling in language arts, and creation of digital documentaries in history class.

Join ISTE authors Glen Bull and Tom Hammond as they discuss how to acquire images, analyze them, and use them to create and communicate in classroom settings. They will discuss the latest research on ways to use images to enhance student achievement and learning outcomes, and will provide practical tips on seamlessly integrating this technology into the standard curriculum.

This session is designed for K–12 teachers, technology coordinators, higher education educators, and pre-service teachers.

About the Presenters

Glen Bull has been exploring ways to connect technology and schools since the Internet was first linked to schools. He is a founding member and past president of the Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE) and subsequently was a recipient of its lifetime achievement award. He served as director of Teacher-LINK, one of the nation's first regional K-12 Internet systems and developed one of the nation’s first statewide K-12 Internet systems, Virginia's Public Education Network (PEN).

He has written more than 200 articles for ISTE’s journals and publications and is the author of an on-going column, The Connected Classroom, for ISTE’s flagship publication, Learning & Leading with Technology. He also is the editor of ISTE’s bestselling book, Teaching with Digital Images.

He is currently collaborating on ways to use digital images to affect learning outcomes through applications such as digital storytelling.  He and his colleagues have developed a suite of web-based tools designed to allow students to construct compelling digital stories that combine digital images with a narrative in the student’s own voice. The on-line web-based digital editor supports Ken Burns-style pan-and-zoom capabilities and titling, with integrated links to online collections of digital archives of images. Field tests are being conducted with a consortium of Virginia schools collaborating with the Library of Congress and with the Smithsonian.

Tom Hammond is a graduate fellow at the Center for Technology and Teacher Education at the University of Virginia. He teaches technology integration courses for pre-service teachers, and his research focus is student-created digital media in K-12 classrooms. Prior to coming to
UVA, Tom taught K-12 history and language arts for ten years, in the United States, Haiti, and Saudi Arabia.

When not teaching, researching, or writing about digital media, Tom enjoys taking pictures of his recently-born son and posting them on Flickr.
