Getting to the Bottom of Computer Hardware: Creating Chips, Gates, and Interfaces
by Graham Smyth

Through hands-on activities participants will build inexpensive peripherals, write software and develop graphical user interfaces (GUIs) for interfacing activities. Starting with a single LED (Light Emitting Diode) activity, participants will learn how to display binary numbers in the real world and display their ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) coded name in lights. Demonstrations of student built interfacing systems will include "One Byte in a Block", "Night Rider", "Traffic Lights" and the "Music Box Tester". These interfacing activities and demonstrations will be placed in the context of the Computer Engineering courses.
