SIGML

Mobile Learning SIG (formerly the Handheld Computing SIG)

SIGML is the interest group that is an advocate for mobile learning worldwide, and promotes meaningful integration of mobile devices in teaching and learning in formal and informal learning environments. Members of SIGML include teachers, administrators, technology coordinators, university faculty and researchers, and representatives from profit and non-profit entities, including government. We hope you will get involved and join us. Please direct any inquiries to SIGML's Chair, Mark van 't Hooft (mvanthoo@kent.edu).

The goal of the SIG is to foster a community of stakeholders in order to support the use of mobile learning and promote best practices in the area of mobile and wireless computing integration in education.

Goals and Objectives

SIGML's activities are specifically aimed at:

  • Support for mobile device integration in different types of learning environments. Support includes access to SIG members via synchronous and asynchronous communication channels, and access to expertise and professional development in the area of mobile learning integration in education;
  • Dissemination of best practices and best practices research in the area of mobile learning and computing;
  • Creation of effective research tools and methodologies;
  • Examination of issues related to mobile technology integration including (but not limited to) equity, the digital divide, acceptable use, safety, Special Needs students, and English-as-a-Second-Language user issues;
  • Provide recommendations for the development of appropriate mobile learning tools (hardware and software and related curriculum for teaching and learning)

Book Study

SIGML is hosting a book study during the 2009-2010 academic year, and we would like your input. Members suggested nine titles for the book study. Please take a couple of minutes to take a look at the choices and pick your favorites. The survey will close on December 2, 2009, and the Book Study will start in January 2010. SIGML
