The first print issue of the Journal of Research on Technology in Education is now available. Articles present academic research on the effects of laptop use on teachers and students, evaluation of educational multimedia software, student orientation for online courses, the differences in student achievement in distance learning and face-to-face courses, and the potential for computer technology to address different learning styles. This issue also marks the first time JRTE has relied heavily on online supplements, appendices, tables of data, questionnaires, and other materials that appear only online. Don Knezek, TSSA Project Director, will present the Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA) at November’s NSBA Technology + Learning Conference. Along with Chip Kimball (ISTE’s U.S. Policy Advocacy Committee President) and Heidi Rogers (TSSA Project Co-Director and ISTE Past President), Don will present a pre-conference session on TSSA’s applications and anticipated impact. This 3-hour session will be WebCast on November 7th, from 9 am–12 pm (ET). The Alliance for Childhood, a group that grew out of the Waldorf School movement, believes using computers in early childhood and elementary education is misguided and destructive of children's real needs. The Technology Standards for School Administrators (TSSA) Collaborative moved one step closer to the scheduled October release of their highly anticipated standards for leading technology in schools and districts. The collaborative is seeking national review and feedback on this first version of the standards to include all the components—Foundation Standards, Performance Indicators, Profiles of Technology-Leading Administrators, and Scenarios of the TSSA Standards in Practice.

Amy Perry of the New York State Association for Computers and Technologies in Education (NYSCATE) and Colleen Stieler of the Queensland Society of Information Technology in Education (QSITE) were recognized as the 2001 Outstanding Technology Leader in Education and 2001 Outstanding Technology-using Educator (respectively) at the National Educational Computing Conference (NECC) in Chicago on June 25. Each received $1,000 toward conference costs and one year of membership to ISTE. The Federal Communications Commission released rules implementing the Children's Internet Protection Act (CIPA) Thursday, April 5. CIPA mandates that schools and libraries receiving E-rate discounts and certain other federal technology funding, put into place Internet safety policies that include installation and use of Internet filtering software beginning July 1, 2001.

The Children’s Internet Protection Act (“CHIP”) will go into effect on April 20, 2001. ISTE & CoSN outline concerns and suggestions for CHIP before the Federal Communications Commission.
