L&L Turning 35 and Seeks Your Input

As the new year fast approaches, you may be wondering where 2006 has gone. Well, ISTE’s L&L staff is wondering how we’re already facing volume 35 of the magazine. That’s right, Learning & Leading with Technology will be 35 years young in 2007. To help us plan for that notable milestone, the L&L staff would like your opinions about potential target topics for those upcoming issues. ISTE Partners with HP Technology for Teaching Program

For the fourth year, HP is partnering with ISTE to provide professional development for teams participating in the HP Technology for Teaching grant program. HP will award approximately $10 million in cash and equipment to schools in the U.S. and Puerto Rico through the HP Technology for Teaching Program. Participants will work in an online environment to improve their skills and knowledge about effective technology integration in teaching and learning and align their work with the National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) as they implement their projects. ISTE Eugene Hosts High-Level NETS Event

Tim Magner, the U.S Department of Education’s director of the Office of Educational Technology, joined representatives from various stakeholder groups and a student panel at ISTE’s Oregon offices December 11 to review the NETS Refresh Writing Team’s draft of the updated student standards. Popularity of JRTE on Rise among Researchers

ISTE’s Journal of Research on Technology in Education is on course for another record-breaking year for submissions. In recent years, editors for the journal receive an average 110 submissions and have already surpassed that number for 2006. The journal publishes 20-24 manuscripts each year, maintaining an acceptance rate well below 25%. The James Wiebe memorial fund was set up by ISTE to honor an original member of the ISTE NETS leadership team, and a very important part of the ISTE family. The ISTE fund has been donated to the CSULA Foundation for the Division of Applied and advanced Studies in Education to purchase computer-lab software in James’s memory.

Action Opportunity for U.S. Advocates

SIGCS Changes Focus—and Name

ISTE’s special interest group on computer science (SIGCS) is changing its name and its focus. The renamed SIGCT (special interest group for the computing teacher) aims to be more inclusive of PK–12 instructors in math, business, and other disciplines, who may not self-identify as computer science teachers. PBS TeacherLine Earns Full NETS•T Alignment

After thorough review, ISTE® has awarded its coveted NETS Seal of Alignment to the PBS TeacherLine Capstone Certificate Program documenting mastery of the National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T). The program has earned alignment with every standard and performance indicator making up the rigorous benchmarks. PBS TeacherLine teamed up with ISTE for development of an assessment program for teachers who lead the way in classroom technology integration.
