"But we're disappointed in the across-the-board cuts to all education programs, including EETT. This may be the best compromise we could make this year, but it's not good enough for America's students, parents, and educators."

ISTE members are invited to nominate (themselves or other) visionary Ed Tech leaders to serve on the ISTE board of directors. Nominations will be accepted from 12/17/07 through 1/22/08 for five open Board positions with two-year terms starting in June 2008.

ISTE will begin accepting nominations for several award programs in mid-December. These include the Outstanding Teacher and Leader Awards and the Sylvia Charp Award for innovative school districts. Nominations for the Teacher and Leader Awards must come from an ISTE affiliate organization; any individual can nominate a school district for the Sylvia Charp Award, which is given in conjunction with T.H.E. Journal.

Most recently in Dubai, where ISTE CEO Don Knezek consulted with education officials and signed an MOU for a global forum on technology and innovation to be held in Dubai April 1-3, 2008. Knezek is regularly called on as a key resource by educators and policy-makers from all over the world who seek his advice and support on standards development, the training of teachers and leaders, strategic planning for transformation, and event participation. In recent months these requests have come from China, India, Australia, Singapore, the United Arab Emirates, Costa Rica, Malaysia, Canada, Bermuda, the Philippines, Finland, Tokyo and UNESCO officials.

"We're now at the halfway mark in our three-year project to update the standards," notes Lynn Nolan, ISTE's senior director for educational leadership and for the NETS Refresh Project. "We're happy to report that more than 2500 of you from all over the world have contributed your expertise in face-to-face forums and online surveys. Thank you so much for your energy and ideas." More than 2000 education professionals from all 50 states and 22 countries helped define the NETS for Students, which debuted at NECC 2007. And as of November 2007, nearly 700 educators from 45 states and 15 countries have weighed in on the NETS for Teachers.

The winter 2007 edition of the Journal of Research on Technology in Education is now available online. This edition includes research on social studies reading comprehension with the use of an electronic pop-up dictionary, the role of teacher questioning in promoting dialogic literary inquiry in computer-mediated communication, and the impact of problem-based learning on teachers' beliefs regarding technology use.

Chairman George Miller (D-CA) recently released the U.S. House Education Committee's Higher Ed package (H.R. 4143) which includes a proposal developed by ISTE and its SIGTE members. ISTE's director of government affairs, Hilary Goldmann, spearheaded the process and worked with Congressman Rush Holt (D-NJ) to include it in the legislation. In a letter of support for the "Preparing Teachers for Digital Age Learners" program, ISTE CEO Don Knezek noted that "it is incumbant on our nation to produce teachers who have the skills and expertise" to help students succeed in a competitive global environment.
