ISTE's NECC Hosts Global Education Summit
The International Society of Technology in Education (ISTE®) teamed up with the Education Commission of the States (ECS) and Microsoft Corporation to present the Global Education Competitiveness Summit (GECS) June 29 and 30, 2009 in Washington, DC.
"This summit brought together decision and policy makers at the state level to talk about opportunities for American students and to increase the level of global competitiveness," says Leslie Conery, Deputy CEO of ISTE. "We need to be back on track to being considered one of the top countries in education."
The summit opened at the National Press Club with remarks by Governor Tim Pawlenty of Minnesota, host of the event. Ontario premier Dalton McGuinty also gave a speech to more than 70 cabinet-level officials from 13 U.S. states and several high-achieving countries, including Canada, Finland and Singapore. The event concluded with working sessions and a tour at ISTE's 30th annual National Educational Computing Conference (NECC), where hundreds of student showcases, poster sessions, and exhibits demonstrated what a globally competitive education could be.
One outcome of the summit was a multi-stakeholder partnership of states committed to delivering the workers who will best position them through the current economic crisis and into the future. The summit sought to influence state governors who have the power to directly impact K-12 education, higher education, economic development and resources in their states.
