Assessment of teachers is a complex mandate for most schools, districts, states, and colleges of education. The latest book from the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE) can help with this crucial endeavor. “National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers—Resources for Assessment” provides a full range of rigorous, workable, and evidence-based assessment instruments and procedures.

“National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers—Resources for Assessment” is a must-have book for teacher educators, K–12 and college of education administrators, professional development and technology coordinators, and classroom teachers. Using National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers (NETS•T) as basic criteria, this essential guide shows how to apply rubrics, choose assessment strategies and instruments, and report measurable results. The new book includes:

  • rubrics for every NETS•T standard and performance indicator;
  • rubrics for the ISTE Essential Conditions;
  • data-gathering tools such as observation instruments and surveys;
  • guidelines for creating teacher portfolios; and
  • standards and performance indicators for National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education review of advanced programs.

Teams of teachers and teacher educators from around the country collaborated to develop the “National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers—Resources for Assessment.” The NETS Project team shares authorship of the book.

According to Richard Ingram, PhD, educational technology coordinator at James Madison University College of Education and co-author of a recently granted multimillion dollar proposal to help teachers integrate technology effectively into their classrooms, “The rubrics in ‘Resources for Assessment’ provide the tools we need to implement our program. Without this book, we’d have to develop our own rubrics, a monumental undertaking. This book provides a practical method for large-scale assessment of teachers’ competencies relative to the NETS standards.”

The National Educational Technology Standards (NETS) Project was initiated by ISTE’s Accreditation and Professional Standards Committee. The primary goals of the NETS Project are to enable stakeholders in PK–12 education to develop and implement national standards for technology-literate students and the educational uses of technology that facilitate school improvement. The NETS Project developed the standards for students and teachers highlighted in NETS for Students and NETS for Teachers, and facilitated the Technology Standards for School Administrators Project. More than 40 states now use the NETS in their statewide technology and education plans; read a complete listing.

A membership organization, ISTE provides leadership and service to improve teaching and learning by advancing the effective use of technology in education.
