ISTE STRATEGIC PLAN

Adopted by the Board of Directors at the September, 2004 Board meeting


MISSION

ISTE provides leadership and service to improve teaching and learning by advancing the effective use of technology in education.


VISION

ISTE is the trusted global leader in building capacity and disseminating best practices for appropriate and ubiquitous use of technology for all learners in a dynamic international learning environment.

ISTE prioritizes how it carries out activities with stakeholders respecting the following organizational values:

STRATEGIC GOALS

In Spring 2004, ISTE identified the following strategic goals for achieving its mission:

1. Build organizational leadership and capacity through renewal and growth of diverse membership and through community building among members and stakeholders.

2. Articulate a compelling rationale and advocate for the effective use of technology in support of teaching, learning, and educational leadership.

3. Advance the art and science of teaching, learning, and educational leadership with and about technology through research, development, and other capacity-enhancing activities.

4. Disseminate resources, knowledge, expertise, and effective professional practice through communication and distribution strategies that best meet the needs of ISTE members and other educational stakeholders.

5. Develop and sustain a vibrant, responsive, highly effective and self-renewing organization optimized to ensure the responsible achievement of ISTE's mission and its mission-aligned strategic goals.


Goal 1. Build Capacity

Build organizational leadership and capacity through renewal and growth of diverse membership and through community building among members and stakeholders.

1.1 ISTE will recruit, develop, recognize, and involve volunteers, members, staff, and collaborators who provide highly-effective leadership for ISTE's mission and goals.

1.2 ISTE will foster an inclusive environment that encourages professional growth.

1.3 ISTE will promote a sense of community by facilitating a continuous exchange of ideas among members and non-member stakeholders.

1.4 ISTE will effectively link its global membership and various subsets across common interests, affinities, issues, and needs.

1.5 ISTE will leverage the specific expertise of its membership as a key asset of relationships, partnerships, and contracts.

1.6 ISTE will maintain an effective feedback system to ensure that communications and service needs of its members and of the educational technology community are addressed.


Goal 2. Articulate and Advocate

Articulate a compelling rationale and advocate for the effective use of technology in support of teaching, learning, educational leadership, and policy development.

2.1 ISTE will engage in visible and effective thought-leadership related to the use of technology in support of teaching, learning, and educational leadership.

2.2 ISTE will seek to influence educational policy and decision-making at all levels by providing high-quality information related to technology in support of teaching, learning, and educational leadership.

2.3 ISTE will maintain alliances and initiatives that result in effective advocacy at local, state, regional, national and international levels of policy and decision-making.


Goal 3. Advance the Field

Advance the art and science of teaching, learning, and educational leadership with and about technology through research, development, and other capacity-enhancing activities.

3.1 ISTE will establish itself as the recognized authority internationally for providing high-quality information related to technology in teaching, learning, and educational leadership.

3.2 ISTE will promote and facilitate universal access to foundation learning and teaching about technology and its uses, and will collaborate with other organizations to facilitate quality advanced and specialized education in technology-focused disciplines.

3.3 ISTE will maintain and support evaluation and assessment efforts that identify effective uses of technology in teaching, learning and educational leadership.

3.4 ISTE will enhance its status as the trusted source for professional development and information dissemination related to promising practices in the use of technology for PreK-20 teaching, learning and educational leadership.

3.5 ISTE will leverage its core competencies to assist educators at all levels to implement best practices.

3.6 ISTE will model best practices, including those which demonstrate concerns for equity and ethics, in its ongoing work with staff, Board, membership and extended communities.


Goal 4. Engage and Disseminate

Disseminate resources, knowledge, expertise, and effective professional practice through communication and distribution strategies that best meet the needs of ISTE members and other educational stakeholders.

4.1 ISTE will organize and disseminate results of research, best practices, assessment and evaluation related to effective teaching, learning and educational leadership with technology.

4.2 ISTE will use varied communication strategies to reach all ISTE members and other educational stakeholders with compelling and useful information and resources.

4.3 ISTE will identify, recognize and publicize individuals and organizations that innovate with technology to achieve highly-effective teaching, learning and educational leadership.

4.4 ISTE will leverage expert resources and established networks in education to support implementation of best practices.


Goal 5. Promote Organizational Improvement

Develop and sustain a vibrant, responsive, highly effective and self-renewing organization optimized to ensure the responsible achievement of its mission and mission-aligned strategic goals.

5.1 ISTE will document and maintain bylaws, policies and procedures consistent with the mission, strategic goals, and non-profit status of the organization.

5.2 ISTE will maintain quality and adequate staffing within healthy, respectful, stimulating and productive work environments.

5.3 ISTE will ensure the fiscal viability of the organization supported by ethical and generally accepted accounting practices.

5.4 ISTE will maintain a modern human resources, technical, and internal services infrastructure to optimize organizational capacity, health and effectiveness.

5.5 ISTE will deliver quality services highly valued by its inclusive and engaged membership.
