Affiliate Representative on the ISTE Board-Call for Nominations
Position Open for 2010-2012
The ISTE Affiliate membership is provided two representative seats on the ISTE Board, which serve staggered terms. One representative position is open this election year. Term of service for the open position begins the first day of the ISTE Board meeting immediately preceding ISTE’s annual conference in 2010 and concludes a day prior to the first day of the ISTE Board meeting immediately preceding ISTE’s annual conference in 2012.Nominations may only be submitted via a nominee’s Affiliate organization. Each Affiliate may submit only one nominee. Please read all information and instructions here then prepare your nomination materials and submit them online.

ISTE Board Affiliate Representative Responsibilities
- Represent all Affiliates as it pertains to ISTE organizational strategies, goals, and activities. Board members are expected to (1) set overall strategy and policy objectives, (2) respond to the ways the staff plans to achieve those aims, and (3) monitor whether the organization is making sufficient progress toward its goals.
- Serve as a member of the Affiliate Membership Committee (AMC) and attend periodic meetings (teleconference expenses paid; face-to-face meetings TBD)
- Attend ISTE Board meetings (three two-day face-to-face meetings annually plus monthly teleconferences - expenses paid; face-to-face meetings in locations TBD)
- May be asked to serve as the Board liaison to the AMC.
Responsibilities, Time Commitments, and Expense Reimbursement
If elected to the ISTE Board of Directors, you will be asked to sign a Disclosure Statement (PDF) and acknowledgment that you've read the ISTE Code of Conduct (PDF). You will also be asked to attend the Board meetings, participate in conference calls, and correspond by e-mail. As a candidate you are encouraged to inform your employer of your desire to serve on the ISTE Board. As the Board physically meets three times a year for 2–3 days each time, your employer will need to be supportive of your commitment. Audio conferencing and committee involvement may require an additional time commitment of two to ten hours per month. If your employer is familiar with ISTE's mission, they should be supportive of your desire to serve on the Board and further ISTE's objectives.
The full Board meets three times per year. One meeting is in conjunction with ISTE's Annual Conference. The locations of two of the remaining Board meetings are determined by the Board.
ISTE covers the airfare to the meetings as well as all transportation costs (shuttles, cabs, parking, etc.). ISTE Conference registration fees are covered, and ISTE reimburses reasonable hotel expenses for Board meetings. Meals are provided, so that expense is not applicable.
Nominee Requirements
Nominees must meet all of the following requirements:
- Nominee is a member of ISTE.
- Nominee has attended an Affiliate Annual Meeting (held in conjunction with ISTE's annual
conference) within the last three years.
- Nominee is able to participate in ISTE Board and AMC meetings during the appointed term.
- Nominee agrees to represent the best interests and needs of the Affiliate membership.
Nomination Process
ISTE’s entire membership is eligible to vote for the final slate of candidates for the Affiliate Representative position on the ISTE Board, as well as all open Board positions. The Affiliate Membership Committee, on behalf of the full Affiliate membership, is responsible for coordinating the nomination process to determine the final slate of candidates to run in the ISTE Board election in March 2010.
Each Affiliate may submit through its Affiliate Representative one nominee for consideration. Nomination materials must be received by 5:00pm PST January 6, 2010. Nominations must be submitted online at: http://tinyurl.com/affrep2010.
Nomination Submission
- Nomination must be submitted by a designated representative of your Affiliate. Only one nomination per Affiliate will be accepted.
- You will be asked to fill in contact information about the nominee and submitter.
- In addition to the questions below, you will be asked to email a resume and picture.
- Nominee must prepare answers to the following questions:
- Years of experience in educational technology and related questions.
- Participation with ISTE and ISTE's Conference.
- Two professional goals that align with ISTE's Strategic Plan.
- What skills, level of involvement with ISTE, and experiences in the area of educational technology qualify you to serve on the ISTE Board?
- Identify the three most salient issues in educational technology and discuss how they affect K-12 education and the educational community.
- How do you envision leveraging your position on the ISTE Board to benefit ISTE members?
Election Process
All nominations will be reviewed by the Affiliate Membership Committee for eligibility. The committee must receive a minimum of two eligible candidates. If more than two eligible nominations are received, the committee will hold a primary election in which all active Affiliates may vote. Each Affiliate may submit one vote, but must vote for two names. The top two finalists (or if there is no primary, the two eligible candidates) will be forwarded to the ISTE Board Nominations Committee.
The Nominations Committee will develop a list of two candidates from the nominations received and will submit that list to the ISTE Board for approval. Once the ISTE Board has approved the candidates for each position, all nominees will be informed of the decisions, and ISTE members will be asked to vote online for the selected candidates in a general election starting in March 2010.
