Howard Levin, PK–12 Schools Representative

Howard Levin is director of technology at the Urban School of San Francisco. He has an eclectic background of skills and experiences gained from over 20 years as a high school teacher and department chair, K–8 lead administrator, and technology director. He has gained national recognition for his work at the Urban School, in particular for his work promoting ubiquitous laptops for students and teachers in a 1:1 program that naturally integrates laptops into the normal learning process. Under Howard’s leadership, Urban’s technology program has attracted visitors from around the world.

Howard’s work with http://www.tellingstories.org, an oral history website, earned Urban an NAIS Leading Edge award for technology in independent schools. He began integrating technology in the classroom as teacher and Chair of History at the Overlake School in Redmond, WA. He also served as Assistant Principal of the Jewish Day School of Metropolitan Seattle. He holds a master’s in education from the University of Washington.

As a contributing author to ISTE’s Learning and Leading with Technology (November, 2003; April, 2004; Dec/January, 2005/06), and as a frequent speaker at national conferences (including several at NECC), Howard purposefully communicates the powerful impacts modern technology tools can play to support, enhance, and extend learning for all students. His dedication to teaching and the promotion of technology transcends his professional position at the Urban School out of a sincere desire to make a positive impact on educators both regionally and nationally.

Howard brings to the ISTE Board a unique combination as an educational visionary, a writer and speaker, a building-based lead technology supervisor and implementer, a teacher-trainer in the integration of computers in all subject areas, a classroom teacher, a hands-on supporter for students, teachers and administrators, and a skilled active user of a plethora of technology tools. Howard brings to the Board his many interests in promoting student learning—in particular using technology.
