JCSE Online

October 2001

Welcome to the first issue of JCSE Online! We are very interested in what you think about this format. If you dislike it, think about why you dislike it, and let me know. Similarly, if you think it works well, reflect a bit on why that is so, and contact me.

This move to electronic publishing is occurring mostly at the insistence of ISTE, but we see some very positive possibilities. An e-mail message is sent to the membership list and it contains direct links to the articles. Please note that this issue is freely accessible, but future issues will be for SIGCS members only. Your member number will be included in the e-mail message notifying you that a new issue of JCSE Online has been posted. (If you are a member and happened upon this issue of JCSE Online but did not receive the message let us know at iste@iste.org, and we will be sure to include you on the e-mail list. If you are not a member, consider joining.)

We plan to post four issues of JCSE Online this academic year, then publish a print compendium for your summer reading pleasure. The print version will contain the articles and non-business material.

We are hopeful that this will be the long-term plan also. However, it has not yet been determined whether future issues will be published in a yearly printed form. Our contention is that an archival journal such as ours should have a print version. Hopefully, we’ll be able to convince the ISTE Board that this is true. So, let us know what you think.

From the Chair
Only You Can Make SIGCS Strong

J. Philip East
The message from the Chair of SIGCS is essentially a discussion of some of the activities that SIGCS can and should be working on. It is also a call for help. Take a look to see how you might contribute.

Minutes from the SIGCS Annual Meeting
Cheri Burch
This issue is essentially devoted to happenings last summer at, or associated with NECC 2000 in Atlanta, Georgia. Thus, it includes the minutes of the annual meeting of SIGCS that occurred there. Once again, Cheri Burch had done a fine job of recording the gist of our business meeting at NECC. The minutes give you the official picture of what happened. Thank you, Cheri.

Computer Science and Information Technology Symposia
Chris Stephenson
Just prior to NECC 2000 and 2001, the Computer Science and Information Technology Symposium was held. The 2000 symposium was co-chaired by Chris Stephenson and Fadi Deek. One of Fadi’s tasks was to supervise the work of several graduate students assigned to attend and take notes on the symposium. Fadi then edited their work into a single document summarizing the sessions. The 2001 symposium, chaired by Chris Stephenson, also followed this model, with Diane McGrath (former editor of JCSE and JRTE) editing the document.

Chris has provided us with an introduction to the 2000 symposium—what it was and how it came about—as well as access to the notes from 2000 and 2001.
