John Thompson

Welcome to the second issue of the Journal for Computing Teachers (name changed earlier this year from the Journal for Computer Science Education). To recap from our first issue, JCT has changed to an online publication that is available to everyone, not just ISTE members. The publication has several issues each with multiple authors. And while JCT’s Guidelines for Publication also have changed a bit in the past year, the submission process is pretty much the same. We accept unsolicited papers and other materials for possible inclusion in JCT. E-mail your paper or material to me, indicating if you want an editor (me) review or a peer review, and we will go from there. If you have any questions or just want to discuss the suitability of a possible submission, feel free to contact me (thompsjt@buffalostate.edu, 716.860.0341 cellphone).

We continue building an Editorial Review Board for the peer review process. Our current Board members are listed below. Please contact me if you are interested in being on the Board and/or want more information.

This second issue of 2008 has seven informative papers for your reading pleasure and professional edification. The following papers were peer-reviewed first, meaning they were reviewed by members of our Editorial Review Board (see listing below) and then I worked some more with the authors after that. George Daukantas in Peace Village: A Teacher’s Web Tool gives educators a Web-based resource to supplement student learning in several subjects. Zulfiqar Khan in A New Technique for Teaching Introductory Programming Course using Constructivist Approach discusses the positive impact of teaching programming by using a constructivist approach. Sanghoon Park and Chanhee Son in The Functional Analysis of Handheld Computers researches m-learning (mobile learning) and best practices to integrate handheld computers into classroom learning.

The following papers were editor-reviewed, meaning only I worked with authors. Ruth Guo in Audio Design and Visual Design in Digital Video Production looks at digital video in educational settings to strengthen student learning. Nikos Konstantakis and Ioannis Tsoukalas in Didactics of Computer Ethics: A Literature Overview review studies on computer ethics didactics, which is a new field of study. Lon Levy in An Introduction to Sorting from a Human Perspective examines a method of teaching sorting techniques from ordinary human activity, and proposes a pedagogy that follows logically from such activity. Christopher Ward in Information Fluency: A Literary Review reviews the confusion around computer literacy and Internet literacy, and also Internet literacy with information fluency.

We hope that you enjoy this fall 2008 issue of the Journal for Computing Teachers.
