Students graduating from teacher education programs today—especially students prepared to teach middle and/or high school—can expect to participate in some type of distance education teaching during their careers. Many colleges and schools of education around the country are now beginning to provide preparation in this important area, and all should be thinking about the need for teacher preparation in the expanding field of distance learning.

This paper provides a review of the literature that documents technology mentoring models used in higher education and K­12 schools. Various mentoring models from teacher education programs and K­12 schools are described.

Seventeen teacher education candidates enrolled in an instructional strategies course experienced an innovative approach to infusing technology into teacher education coursework. All of the participants became proficient at using digital imaging devices and editing software, and these new skills had an impact on their understanding of content knowledge and the classroom learning environment.

Recent legislation, new learning theory, and technological advances have shaped the concept of universal design and made it a reality in contemporary classrooms. Tomorrow’s teachers now need the knowledge and skills to work in environments where methods and materials are universally designed.

In order to provide preservice teachers with the opportunity to learn and use technology while working with students, one school of education recently integrated a clinical component into one of its instructional technology classes. In this class, preservice teachers work with local fifth graders to research, design, and create an interactive HyperStudio stack.
