Panel on Accreditation a
Highlight
of SIGTE Forum
The SIGTE Forum was held on Sunday, June 29 from 1 to 5 pm at the
Washington
State Convention and Trade Center. M.D. Roblyer, Lajeane Thomas, Peggy
Kelly,
Marianne Handler, and Neal Strudler made up a special panel for
discussion of
standards, accreditation, and graduate technology education programs
entitled,
"Impact of Standards and Accreditation on Graduate Technology
Education
Program Development: Who's in the Driver's Seat?" Over 40 were in
attendance
to pose questions to the panelists and discuss issues relevant to
addressing
standards and meeting accreditation requirements in graduate
technology programs.
The Forum also provides an opportunity for colleagues to discuss
issues of
interest in technology and teacher education and for getting good
minds together
to help plan SIGTE activities for NECC 2004. Look for messages on the
e-mail
list calling for participation in NECC 2004, and make plans to join us
at the
Forum in New Orleans.
Research Award
The 2003 SIGTE Research Award was presented to Wendy Martin, Naomi
Hupert,
and Noga Admon from the Center for Children and Technology/Education
Development
Center and Carmen Gonzales from New Mexico State University for their
paper
"Real Teachers making Real Changes: The RETA Model for
Professional Development."
This paper describes the evaluation of a statewide professional
development
program in New Mexico. The authors were recognized at the annual ISTE
Business
Meeting on Monday, and Wendy joined us on Tuesday at the SIGTE
Business Meeting
to receive her award plaque. The paper was presented in a round table
format
Wednesday morning.
Melissa Pierson from the University of Houston chaired the Research
Paper Award
Committee the past two years, and Tina Heafner from the University of
North
Carolina at Charlotte will chair the Research Paper Award Committee
for 2003-2004.
Tina welcomes SIGTE member involvement on the review committee, both
for reviewing
research paper proposals in the fall and for the paper award in the
spring.
Contact Tina at theafner@triad.rr.com

SIGTE Makes Presence Known
at NECC
2003
The success of the Third Annual SIGTE Forum set the tone for the rest
of the
SIGTE activities in Seattle last June. SIGTE members and colleagues
led four
successful workshops and four well-attended concurrent panel sessions
at NECC
this year. Topics of interest like digital video, wireless computing,
integrating
handhelds and professional issues drew large crowds, and provided
attendees
with information on cutting edge technologies for teacher education.
Many SIGTE
members contribute to the success of NECC each year, and in 2003 the
SIGTE contribution
was once again, large.
Reception Acquaints
Membership with
SIGs
The SIG reception on Monday, June 30 provided an opportunity for NECC
attendees
to get acquainted with members from each of the ISTE SIGs. Dave
Edyburn, Interim
SIG Council President, welcomed guests and introduced the officers of
each SIG.
Guests enjoyed the hospitality of the School Library Journal, sponsor
of the
event, while learning more about the mission and goals of the SIGs and
networking
with SIG members.
