President's Message

October 2002

Greetings!

It's my pleasure to welcome you to ISTE's SIGTel Bulletin. We've moved from our former paper journal to this medium for a number of reasons. These include:

  • changes in cost production that should reduce production and shipping costs
  • easier access to the publication by some international members
  • the ability to apply new publishing techniques (our editors have requested that they be able to include video streaming) and flexibility and fluidity in publication

Our two new editors, Tuiren Bratina and Zella Boulware from the University of North Florida, have posted information about themselves along with a call for articles, reviewers, advertising to our colleagues and suggestions for improving the Bulletin. You can read this information on our About page. Please help us make the Bulletin a model online professional publication that is a "must have" for all folks interested in telelearning. Please help us make it easy for Tuiren and Zella to succeed as editors by providing the help they are seeking. For example, you might want to serve as a reviewer or even submit an article for possible publication. Their enthusiasm and diligence to the Bulletin is excellent and will only flourish with our support!

In relation to the Bulletin, I want to thank Past President Betsy Frederick for her diligence in moving SIGTel's publishing efforts forward and online. The editor of SIGTel's Journal of Online Learning in 2000 was Dr. Terresa Gibney, who became ill and was unable to continue in the role. Dr. James Bartlett, a faculty member at the University of Illinois at the time, ably served as interim editor until a new job required him to relinquish the role last year. As president, Betsy invested time and energy finding a more permanent editor. Last fall, she worked with ISTE staff to review information provided about each candidate and recommended Tuiren and Zella to our board and ISTE staff for approval. We appreciate Betsy's efforts on our behalf in relation to the Bulletin. The twists and curves were certainly not by design. She endured and moved SIGTel forward. We have the potential with our outstanding new editors to achieve great success once again—this time online!

Thanks again to all our past editors, associate editors, and Betsy for their efforts to make the Bulletin a valuable part of SIGTel membership benefits! Tuiren and Zella, lead on!
