A Reader's
Response
to Betsy Frederick's 31 October 2002 SIGTel Bulletin article, "What
is Telelearning?"
New Zealand Teacher Trainee Paula Murray sent the
following
response to Betsy Frederick's original article. Opinions expressed by
Ms. Murray
are her own.
I agree with so many of the things mentioned in your article, Betsy.
I am an online learner who feels that the ability to access
information on
a global level, to collaborate with students from other parts of New
Zealand
and to make new friends is awesome. As a lone parent, I would be
unable, at
this time, to undertake a teaching degree without the superb online
campus provided
by The University of Waikato and lecturers who, in some cases, are
still discovering
this wonderful resource themselves. We are learning together in a way
that,
even when we think we have it under control, throws us a curve ball
that sees
everyone involved rethinking his or her ideas and strategies in an
environment
of free and unabashed sharing. Learning in this environment rich with
new ideas
and multi-cultural opinions is a huge advantage for people who, for
reasons
ranging from disability to location are unable to be involved with
terrestrial
classes.
I also feel that I am more motivated, working in this active
learning environment
of ever-changing opportunity and unending possibilities. To me
Telelearning
is about: Connecting with people and resources to learn more about
ourselves
and the things that interest us. Sharing data, exchanging ideas,
discussing
international events, and debating. Making new friends and discovering
cultures
and places we never knew about before. It is about opening the doors
of the
world for the world!
