Water Quality and Communication

Dottie Herd

Ten Mile Elementary School
Route 2 Box 5
Ten Mile, TN 37880 USA

This series of lessons were student initiated. The STS teaching strategy was implemented. Students began by collecting and testing water samples from tributaries to the Tennessee River and conveying their results to other students in the Tennessee Valley Project (a statewide telecommunication project) using e-mail. They originally planned to compare findings at various locations (before Watts Bar Dam, etc.), but students then became interested in water across the United States and began an all-out campaign using technology to see if they could collect samples from every state using technology.
