SIG News: June 2006

Welcome to the first issue of SIG News, the quarterly newsletter for ISTE Special Interest Group subscribers. The purpose of this bulletin is to highlight the opportunities and benefits available through the SIG Program, and to encourage member-to-member resource sharing.
The mission of the SIG Program, and my responsibilities as its director, center on fostering a valuable exchange of information among members and providing forums for sharing best practices, dialoging with peers, and enhancing professional development activities. This newsletter will acquaint you with the mission of the SIG Program and the activities in which we engage to fulfill this mission.
In this inaugural issue, explore the challenges facing educators in closing the digital equity divide, and learn about ISTE’s new digital equity SIG. Consider whether social networking sites like MySpace.com have a place in the classroom, and what teachers can do to protect students from misuse of these popular services. Learn more about getting started with blogging, and make your voice heard with our member poll.
Much of the content of this first issue originated with ISTE staff, but I look forward to incorporating your responses and suggestions for growing SIG News in the months to come. I hope you will take the time to read about the activities of your peers and will consider getting involved as a volunteer, NECC presenter, or contributor to the community forums. The SIG Program is only as strong as the community of members who support it!
