SIG News: January 2007

Welcome to SIG News, the quarterly newsletter for ISTE’s Special Interest Group Program. I’m pleased to introduce this third issue of the newsletter, which was established to acquaint you with the mission of the SIG Program and the activities we undertake to fulfill it.
We’ve had a busy few months, including the launch of our Technology in Practice Webinar series, our recent initiative in Second Life, and the formation of our SIG Board Committee .
In this issue, learn more about handheld computing, how to set up and use a wiki in your classroom, and how educators are using multi user virtual environments (MUVEs) in their learning environments. You'll hear from a fellow member as she begins a new career in the United Arab Emirates, will learn about an exciting new event at this year's upcoming conference (NECC Atlanta), and will gain valuable classroom ideas from ISTE's SIG for special education technologies.
I'd also like to take this opportunity to introduce you to our new program coordinator, Katrina Svoboda. A recent Yale graduate, Katrina comes to us from Google, and brings a wealth of technical knowledge and some great new ideas for the SIG Program. For those of you already on MySpace, Katrina is managing ISTE's presence there, and you'll be hearing from her often in the coming months.
I hope you will take the time to read about the activities of your peers and will consider getting involved as a volunteer, NECC presenter, or contributor to the community forums. The SIG Program is as strong as the community of members who support it, and we value the many contributions of our diverse membership.
Best regards,
Jennifer Ragan-Fore
