G. Ernest Anderson Receives Lifetime Achievement Award
At its October 23rd annual meeting, the Connecticut Educators Computer Association gave a Lifetime Achievement Award to G. Ernest Anderson, a resident of Madison, CT, and Professor of Education Emeritus at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His career in telecommunications started 63 years ago as a telegraph operator with Western Union, and his career in computing with the Mark I at Harvard.
Anderson, who is a member of SIGTE and SIGTel, is a founder and past President of ISTE. He has worked with the Ministry of Education in Japan, the Chinese Computer Federation (PRC), the Laptop Movement in Australia, and is currently a member of the Kidlink Society, which sponsors projects reaching over 100,000 students in 90 countries.
A certificate signed by Connecticut Governor Jodi Rell was presented to "officially proclaim October 23, 2006, as G. Ernest Anderson Day for the State of Connecticut."
Five SIGIVC Members Win US Distance Learning Association Awards
The US Distance Learning Association recognizes outstanding leaders in distance learning initiatives each year. This year, the recipients were honored at the USDLA Awards ceremony held in Denver, CO, and five of the award recipients were members of ISTE’s SIG for interactive video conferencing (SIGIVC). The SIGIVC members awarded were Darlene Haught, Andrew Knox, Jan Zanetis (SIGIVC's current chair), Marci Powell, Jody Kennedy, Tim Barshinger. Incoming USDLA Board President, Marci Powell, helped to present the awards and is an ISTE SIGIVC member herself.
New Professional Development Webinars from ISTE
ISTE's new Technology in Practice (TIP) Webinar Series offered its first Webinar on Tuesday, January 16th. In total, the series will offer 7 professional development Webinars featuring ISTE authors, and will focus on practical ways to use technology in the education arena. Included in the price of each hour-long Webinar is a book by the presenting author. The series was kicked off with an engaging presentation by ISTE author Bard Williams, an expert in the field of using handhelds and smartphones in education. If you missed the live event, the recorded Webinar will be available soon for purchase.
On January 30, ISTE continues its new Technology in Practice webinar series with an enthusiastic and thought-provoking panel discussion on using and integrating 1-to-1 computing into teaching and learning.
Packaged with ISTE’s new book, 1-to-1 Learning: Laptop Programs that Work, the session will feature author, Pamela Livingston, along with Kim Ketterer, Instructional Technology Specialist for Eugene, OR’s 4J School District, and Anita Givens, an ISTE board member and senior director of the educational technology division of the Texas Education Agency.

New SIG Board Advisory Committee Approved
At ISTE’s September board meeting, the board approved the formation of Board Advisory Committee focused on strengthening the Special Interest Group Program. Working collaboratively with the SIG Council (comprised of a representative from each SIG), the SIG Board Committee will address governance issues, officer development, and member benefit enhancement.
The chair of the committee is the SIG Representative to the board, Camilla Gagliolo. Committee members include Ann Cunningham, Susan Cherup, Gordon Dahlby, Dave Edyburn, Mark van 't Hooft, Doug Johnson, and Joe Kmoch. The staff liaison to the committee is General Membership Program Director, Jennifer Ragan-Fore.
