February 2009 Volunteer Profile

Dr. Betsy Goeltz
SIGAdmin Chair
Dr. Betsy Goeltz is the principal of Rulon M. Ellis Elementary school in Chubbuck, Idaho. As an administrator, Betsy finds it exciting to help implement a variety of strategies that support students at all levels, and for her, that means increased individualization, blended learning, and the integration of web 2.0 tools.
Betsy is an advocate for incorporating effective new strategies that support and extend learning, but notes that it also requires additional funding. She’s written grants to fund these endeavors, and has been gratified "to see the positive results and enthusiasm these grants have generated."
When asked why she enjoys volunteering for ISTE, Betsy notes, "It provides the opportunity to network with others who have incredible expertise. I always come away from offered experiences with new ideas and thoughts to ponder. That is where change starts for me, and I always receive much more than I can offer."
Betsy has been particularly surprised at the speed in with which new technology resources emerge. She is especially interested in the promise of open-source technology and the upsurge of educationally geared social networking to promote learning. In her spare time, she enjoys reading “because it opens the future and brings perspective to the present.”
