September 2008 Volunteer Profile

Joe CoddeJoe Codde
ISTE Ambassador and International Committee Member
East Lansing, MI

As current director of the Educational Technology Certificate Program at Michigan State University (MSU) and Director of ICT in Education, Middle East and North Africa, Joe is proud of the fact that over 2,000 in-service teachers through out Michigan have enrolled in this program at MSU. Not only does he enjoy the opportunity to affect change at his university, but also internationally.

Joe is one of five ISTE Ambassadors, a new volunteer program launched this year to emphasize the "I" in ISTE. Ambassadors are ISTE members who work around the globe in various capacities and have been selected to promote ISTE's mission and benefits.

As an ISTE International Committee member, Joe enjoys networking with other educators who are focused on international development and ICT in education. For the past three years, Joe has been working primarily in the Middle East and North Africa with projects in Algeria, Lebanon, and now in Dubai and the UAE. Currently he is working with the Lebanese American University in Beirut to help implement an educational technology certificate for Lebanese teachers. In addition, MSU is now offering both an educational technology certificate and masters program through their campus in Dubai.

He is continually surprised at the extraordinary excitement and level of commitment teachers are making in Algeria and Lebanon to move further along with technology use in their schools even though they are struggling to get basic technology tools.

Though working and volunteering keep him plenty busy, Joe spends his leisure time as a part-time treasure hunter.
