Beyond the Prototype: Generating Campus-Wide Buy-in for a Tablet Option

Featured Speakers: Dr. Dave Berque; Carol L. Smith, Terri Bonebright, PhD, DePauw University

DePauwUniversityreceived a HP Technology for Teaching Grant in May 2006 and a follow-up leadership grant in 2007. While our proposals called for three course redesigns (Computer Science, Psychology, Education Studies), the equipment has been used to date in 23 courses enrolling 395 students in 9 disciplines (Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Economics, Education, Geosciences, Japanese Language, Physics, and Psychology.) We are currently undertaking a project to give Tablet PCs to approximately 25 faculty members to gain further insight into how Tablets can support teaching and learning. The purpose of this presentation is to help participants consider strategies for moving from a single course redesign project to a more broadly-based initiative. As a starting point, the presenters will share the evaluation and dissemination activities that have been used to share our work with various campus constituencies including prospective students, faculty members, alumni, administrators, and local K–12 schools. Because strategies must be customized to meet local campus culture, the audience will then be asked to work in groups to brainstorm strategies that might be effective at their home institutions. These ideas will be shared (and discussed) with the broader group using DyKnow software. The presenters will summarize these ideas subsequent to the conference and will share the summary with all attendees.
