Tablet PCs as MobileMultimedia Data Collection and Analysis Tools
Featured Speakers: Malu Roldan, PhD, San Jose State University
The Mobility Project at San JoseStateUniversitybuilt connections among university disciplines and the community by bringing the Tablet PCs out of the classroom and into the Field. The project showed positive student outcomes in civic engagement and teamwork skills (see the web page for graphs of these outcomes). The project also highlighted the usefulness of Tablet PCs across a wide range of disciplines — from Management Information Systems to Engineering to Art & Design and Health Science. This presentation will highlight what we have learned about the potential of Tablet PCs as data collection and analysis tools for fieldwork across these disciplines. Tablet PCs, along with software packages like OneNote, make it fairly simple to collect multimedia data out in the field and even analyze the data on-the-fly. With all the data in one portable, digital package, researchers can readily continue analysis and edit data for presentation back at the lab (or perhaps the corner coffee house). This presentation will provide multimedia demos of these applications and discuss the applicability of the techniques across a wide range of fields and endeavors, including product development, user-led design, and community based participatory research.
