Student participation in the virtual world has proven to be engaging and accommodates many learning styles in a differentiated, rigorous approach to simulation, role-playing, content creation, problem solving, critical thinking and collaboration. Most importantly, students take ownership of their learning and are invested in the outcomes and their real world applications.

The team process of designing and creating a virtual presence for your educational institution, the development of authentic, experiential, standard-based curriculum, and implementing it with students in Teen Second Life addresses all of the NETS for administrators, teachers and students and is an innovative approach to establishing a collaborative and all-inclusive learning community.

Focusing on the process of developing constructivist learning in the virtual world, Sheehy will present the steps her teachers have taken this second year of teaching in Ramapo Islands on Teen Second life to translate their content into the virtual landscape. She will outline the best practices that have evolved as a result and the student responses to this 21st century pedagogical shift.

About the Presenter

A dynamic presenter who has established a reputation as the expert in the field of K-12 education in Second Life, Peggy Sheehy is a passionate evangelist for the use of MUVEs that engage the digital native while easing the path for administrators, tech-coordinators and teachers, providing them with the direction and inspiration that will ensure success.

Faced with the challenges of time constraints, budgetary concerns and the plight of teachers who already feel their workload is overwhelming, Sheehy has developed a step by step protocol that brings all investors into the process. She has also developed a comprehensive teacher-training curriculum supporting both face to face and virtual participation. She understands the hurdles faced by those with a vision for 21st century reform and has organized some tried and true steps to anticipate and address these issues.

Ms. Sheehy has presented her work with education in Teen Second Life at the Tech Expo, NYSCATE, NECC, EdNet, and the Tech Forum NY.  She attended the Virtual Worlds Conference in San Jose where she made a strong case for the blending of the technology industry and education. This year, she will be presenting at NECC, Alan November’s BLC Conference 2008, and will be Keynote Speaker at the California League of Middle Schools (CLMS) Annual Technology Conference.

As a true pioneer in virtual world education, she is sought out for advice, curriculum direction and professional development for those that would follow in the footsteps of Ramapo Islands. Her vision encompasses a globally collaborative 3-D virtual world campus where learning is student-centered, product-based, playful, and creative.

Her latest venture, MetaVersEd Consulting Ltd., supports the proposal, design, acquisition, and implementation of education in MUVEs. Ms. Sheehy believes that engagement, edutainment, and the authentic application of 21st Century collaborative tools in education is paramount to preparing our students for success.
