This presentation is targeted to district/school leaders, technology coordinators, teachers and others who are considering the use of open source in their school or district. Topics of discussion will include a generic definition of what open source is, the benefits of using open source, some of the pitfalls of open source implementation, tips on starting an open source implementation in your school or district and some discussion on a few of the more popular applications.

About the Presenter

Randy is currently an independent consultant and owner of k12opensourcehelp.com where he specializes in open source software and content for schools, technology integration, eLearning and web 2.0 applications. Prior to being a consultant, Randy spent nine years as a district level technology director for the Bainbridge Island School District in the Seattle area. He started his career as a classroom teacher where he spent thirteen years teaching grade 5-12 music, advanced ecology, biology, and a bit of math and Utah State History thrown in for good measure. He also spent two years as a high school library media specialist, taught the Novell CNA course to high school students and just for fun, spent a number of years teaching fly fishing and fly tying for the College of Eastern Utah. His favorite saying is "It isn't about the technology, it is about powerful teaching and learning!"
