ISTE’s Digital Equity Summit-atlanta, 2007

During the 2007 Digital Equity Summit, attendees will participate in a national dialogue that addresses critical issues pertaining to digital equity. They will discuss major challenges and continue to explore solutions. Participants will leave with a heightened awareness of digital equity, strategies to help make progress toward digital equity, and the vision to implement a plan. Attendees will continue the dialogue using web-based collaborative tools as they network, nationally and internationally, and share year-long successes and challenges.

This is a must-attend session for educators, state and national leaders, and those interested in working with underserved populations. Attendees will receive a copy of the ISTE published report titled, “A National Consideration of Digital Equity.” The report includes expert advice from the field and strategies for addressing digital equity.

A moderated student panel will provide K–12 students an opportunity to inform the field as they reflect and respond to a variety of questions. The panel will consist of students sharing what they feel are current digital equity issues in education, explore how they currently use technology in schools, and their expectations of using technology for learning. Student panelists will represent the Atlanta Public School System.

Keynote Speaker

Sylvia Rousseau
Professor of Clinical Education; Rossier School of Education
Ed.D., Pepperdine University, California

Dr. Rousseau was appointed LAUSD's District 7 superintendent in 2001. Earlier she served as assistant superintendent of secondary instruction and school services in the district.  Prior to these appointments, she served as co-director of university-school partnerships at UCLA, as well as an adjunct professor.

From 1993 to 2000 she was the principal of Santa Monica High School, which under her leadership achieved one of the largest API gains in California. She reduced the school's drop out rate and increased graduation and college entrance among African American and Latino students. She was lauded by teachers, students and parents for building a strong sense of community on the campus, promoting intercultural understanding and nonviolent conflict resolution, and raising academic expectations and achievement.

Dr. Rousseau has held positions at Loyola Marymount University and was the director of Project AHEAD, which trained and supervised family consultants working with parents. She taught at a number of schools in the LAUSD as well as in Maryland, Ohio and Indiana.

She was awarded the Distinguished Alumni Award from Pepperdine University, Woman of the Year Award from the YWCA in Santa Monica, California, and is a past recipient of the USC Rossier School of Education's (R.O.S.E.) Award

At the Rossier School Dr. Rousseau is a Professor of Clinical Education in the Ed.D. program and her concentration is on leadership and organization within K-12 schools as well as teacher preparation.  She is currently leading a thematic dissertation group around systems and structures that lead to high academic performance in high poverty schools with large concentrations of students of color. 

She received her Ed.D. from Pepperdine University, her M.A. in education from California State University, Los Angeles and her B.A. from the University of Cincinnati and Wake Forest University.
