Cross-Disciplinary Integration of
Technology
Technology & Biology
As part of TTa, some freshmen students in an Introduction to Biology
course
at the University of Illinois participated in an electronic exchange
with 5th
grade students in a rural school district. The students were trained
to use
PacerForum as a means to exchange science related questions. The 5th
graders
would post questions relevant to what they were studying and the
university
students would research an answer for them.

Technology & English Methods
English methods courses prepare preservice English Education majors
for their
classroom experiences. Technology is an integral part of their
training.
Technology & Math/Science Methods
Science and Math methods students had the opportunity to learn how to
integrate
technology into the classroom. They were taught how to use such
programs as
Geometers SketchPad and how to use the Internet as a resource
tool.
Technology & the YLP TTa researchers introduced technology to
students
in the Year-Long Program. The students were given time in the computer
lab to
gain experience with using technology and to explore ways in which to
integrate
technology into their lesson plans.
Instructional Training

The YLP students receive instruction on a variety of different topics.
The students
receive general training instruction in a large group setting and get
hands-on
experience in the school's instructional computing lab. In the lab
setting they
have the opportunity to work in small groups and get further
instruction.
Instructional Training

An important aspect of the YLP training is learning how to use and
integrate
telecommunications in the classroom. Students receive training on the
Internet,
specifically Netscape and Eudora.

Classroom Integration
As well as learning about the Internet, previewing multimedia titles
was a
popular class excercise. Many students integrated this technology into
their
lesson plans when they entered the classroom.
This student teacher taught her first graders how to use multimedia
CD-ROMs.
As part of their daily lessons, multimedia titles were used to enhance
spelling,
math, and reading skills.

This student teacher used the powerbook loaned to her by TTa in her
classroom
to help her 5th graders do creative writing.

This student teacher had her 4th and 5th grade students use
technology to research
animals. The students then built a zoo in their classroom based on the
information
they found.
Small Group Interactions

Through TTa research, we've found that students learn well in small
groups.
This interaction among the peers enhances the students' learning as
they share
their knowledge with others. Often students learn different aspects of
the software
and how to troubleshoot the hardware from other members in the
class.
