School-Based Staff Development for Teaching within Computerized Learning Environments

Abstract
This article describes a staff development model that was created as part of the process of establishing an experimental school. The model is directed specifically at educators working within computerized learning environments. A case study method was used, along with a content analysis of three years of observation. The research concludes that staff development within computerized learning environments requires three components: a clear rationale regarding the school’s objectives, a broad computer infrastructure including personal computers for teachers, and professional computer people within the school coupled with on-the-job individual support. The article also compares this model to the more traditional staff development model.

Dr. Dorit Tubin is a researcher in the School of Education at Tel Aviv University. Her research focuses on innovation in education, especially on establishing a new kind of school organization. Prof. David Chen is an associate professor and dean of the School of Education at Tel Aviv University and head of the Science and Technology Center. His research focuses on the theory of education, and on the implication of ICT integration with schooling on the relationship between student and knowledge.
