Track Substitutes with Google Spreadsheets

 Tip

By Colin Byrne

Problem: It can be difficult to track the availability of substitute teachers when several schools in the same district are drawing from the same pool.

Here's a solution: Use the spreadsheet function in Google Apps to track substitute teachers. We create a spreadsheet and then share it out to the personnel who handle substitutes for each building. This allows the person at each building to see which subs are already spoken for and gives us some limited reporting on substitutes without having to pay for a substitute tracking program.

This tip comes from Colin Byrne, director of technology for the Blind Brook School District in Rye Brook, New York. If you have a tip to share, post it on the comment wall on the L&L group page of the ISTE Community Ning at www.iste-community.org/group/landl or e-mail it to dfingal@iste.org.
