Field Trip to the
Rainforest Deluxe
The
features in the new Field Trip to the Rainforest Deluxe
from
Sunburst/Tenth Planet lend themselves
nicely to
student-created reports and classroom assessment. Using
the program,
students in Grades 4 through 8 travel to tropical rain
forests in
South America, Africa, or Southeast Asia. They explore the
forests
from floor to canopy, meet many forest inhabitants, and
learn about
the role of the rain forest in global society. Students
capture
images and write in their journals. They access the
included field
guide to discover the habits and characteristics of exotic
animals
and lush vegetation. Terms in the guide are defined in a
glossary.

Evolution of Man
Animals on the Move
Expert
Software
has two new titles worth examiningEvolution of Man
and Animals
on the Movedeveloped by Maris Multimedia (the
company
that produced RedShift). Both titles contain interesting
information
and stimulating narrations, and multiple menu selections
allow students
to access the same information from different points of
view. For
example, a visual display of the evolution of primates
links to
text on the primates. Periods of time also link to text on
the primates,
as well as the pictures. It would be nice to have a text
toggle
for the narrations so students could study and question
the information
as it is delivered. Evolution of Man introduces the
theories and
major discoveries that together create an interesting
story of human
development over the centuries. Animals on the Move
focuses on the
biomechanics of animal movement and uses more than 250
video excerpts
from the BBC Natural History film library. For more on
anthropology
or biomechanics, consider these $14.99 hybrid
Macintosh/Windows
CD-ROMs from your local retailer.

an El Niño weather pattern is forming. This Macintosh CD-ROM costs
