The Twelve Days of Christmas

By Ivan W. Baugh

Have you ever wondered about the origin of "The Twelve Days of Christmas?" I remember thinking about it as a youth, wondering where and why they had such an observance. Then it occurred to me to consider how many gifts were received. Back then the math would have taken quite a bit of time. Today, students can use a spreadsheet to determine the number of gifts enumerated in the Christmas song. And they can search the Web for information about the background of the song.
