Cathy Miles Grant (cgrant@edc.org)
is a senior research and development associate at
EDC, in
Newton, Mass. This article grew out of Cathy's work
as professional
development and elementary mathematics specialist
for the
Hanau Model Schools Partnership, based at TERC in
Cambridge,
Massachusetts, and in Hanau, Germany. Cathy is a
former staff
developer, classroom teacher, and special education
teacher
at the elementary and middle school levels. She is
currently
immersed in writing Lenses on Learning, two courses
designed
to support school administrators' learning about
critical
issues in mathematics education reform. Contact her
