Professional Development for Elementary Math Teachers

Elementary math teachers learn that through collaboration with their peers and with the support of a comprehensive schoolwide approach to professional development, they can deepen their understandings of mathematics, teaching, and learning while enhancing their information technology skills.

Cathy Miles Grant (cgrant@edc.org) is a senior research and development associate at EDC, in Newton, Mass. This article grew out of Cathy's work as professional development and elementary mathematics specialist for the Hanau Model Schools Partnership, based at TERC in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in Hanau, Germany. Cathy is a former staff developer, classroom teacher, and special education teacher at the elementary and middle school levels. She is currently immersed in writing Lenses on Learning, two courses designed to support school administrators' learning about critical issues in mathematics education reform.
