on Education Technology. In this position, he has
worked extensively on national projects assessing
the effects of technology in schools. He is the

Digital Age Classroom and co-authored
Technology in American Schools: Seven
Dimensions for Gauging Progress. A
Policymakers Guide. He previously directed
regional and county technology offices. He began

is a technology teacher at Appleby Elementary

computers and peripherals and serves on many

York State Computers and Technologies in Education

and across the state in association with
NYSC&TE. She holds an MS from
SUNYCortland.

Richard Alan Smith ( rsmith2@houstonisd.org)
joined the Houston Independent School District in 1982 and soon
designed
its first middle-school, hands-on computer literacy course. He
now directs
the team of 32 staff members who comprise the Division of
Instructional
Technology and Technical Training. His latest project is a
series of cable
television shows seen in Houston on the HISD channel and
spotlighting
the achievements of outstanding technology-using teachers.

Cathy Miles Grant (

is a senior research and development associate at
EDC, in Newton, Mass. This article grew out of
Cathys work as professional development and
elementary mathematics specialist for the Hanau
Model Schools Partnership, based at TERC in
Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in Hanau, Germany.
Cathy is a former staff developer, classroom
teacher, and special education teacher at the
elementary and middle school levels. She is
currently immersed in writing Lenses on Learning,
two courses designed to support school
administrators learning about critical issues in
