Lifelong Learning: A Powerful Idea Shaping Education

Barbara Bray ( bbray@compstrategies.com) is president of Computer Strategies, LLC. She founded it in 1990 to provide relevant and customized technology staff development for K–12 teachers. She has taught classes at California State, Hayward, and St. Mary’s College and has presented at numerous local, national, and international conferences. She’s the column editor for Technology Coordinators in the Computer-Using Educators ( www.cue.org) newsletter, has written articles on planning and staff development, and is writing two books. Professional Competencies for the Digital Age Classroom

Ed Coughlin ( Ecoughlin@mff.org) is a technology consultant for the Milken Exchange on Education Technology. In this position, he has worked extensively on national projects assessing the effects of technology in schools. He is the primary author of  The Professional Competency Continuum: Professional Skills for the Digital Age Classroom  and co-authored  Technology in American Schools: Seven Dimensions for Gauging Progress. A Policymaker’s Guide. He previously directed regional and county technology offices. From Computer Lab to Technology Class:
A Formula for Transformation

Sandra Sherwood ( ssherwoo@cnyric.org) is a technology teacher at Appleby Elementary School, Albro Road, Marathon, NY 13803; 607.849.3281; fax 607.849.4730. She works with more than 600 K–6 students using technology to enhance the classroom curricula. She maintains all computers and peripherals and serves on many in-house committees. She is an active member of New York State Computers and Technologies in Education (www.nyscate.org). Sherwood also provides teacher training in her district, neighboring districts, and across the state in association with NYSC&TE. She holds an MS from SUNY–Cortland.

Linking Educators to Learning

Beth Buchler ( bbuchler@new-learning.com) develops and conducts staff development programs for teachers and administrators. She is the director of New-Learning Educational Services and works with teachers to effectively integrate technology into their curriculum. As an educational consultant, she works with the Illinois State Board of Education and North Central Regional Education Lab to support engaged learning in the classroom.

He works with Illinois Schools on technology planning, staff development, and technology integration initiatives. Multimedia Institutes Go to the Museum District

Diane Garner ( dgarner1@houstonisd.org) was a classroom teacher for 10 years in the Houston Independent School District and a school-based teacher technologist for 13 years before joining the Instructional Technology Division in 1996. She has presented at several regional and state conferences and her articles on instructional technology have been published in  L&L and  Tech Trends.

Richard Alan Smith ( rsmith2@houstonisd.org) joined the Houston Independent School District in 1982 and soon designed its first middle-school, hands-on computer literacy course. He now directs the team of 32 staff members who comprise the Division of Instructional Technology and Technical Training. His latest project is a series of cable television shows seen in Houston on the HISD channel and spotlighting the achievements of outstanding technology-using teachers.

Beyond Tool Training: Professional
Development for Elementary Math Teachers

Cathy Miles Grant ( cgrant@edc.org) is a senior research and development associate at EDC, in Newton, Mass. This article grew out of Cathy’s work as professional development and elementary mathematics specialist for the Hanau Model Schools Partnership, based at TERC in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in Hanau, Germany. Cathy is a former staff developer, classroom teacher, and special education teacher at the elementary and middle school levels. She is currently immersed in writing Lenses on Learning, two courses designed to support school administrators’ learning about critical issues in mathematics education reform.
