KaleidoMania! Interactive Symmetry

Click for a larger
screenshot.Calling all math and art teachers. Kevin Lee (creator of TesselMania!) has done it again. He has created another soon-to-be classic exploration of art and math that is a visual pleasure for all. KaleidoMania! Interactive Symmetry is now available from Key Curriculum Press.

Even if you don’t teach math or art, take the time to savor the beauty of KaleidoMania! Imagine the way student publications could be enhanced using kaleidoscopic images generated from student and school pictures. Subjects covered include symmetry, isometries, cyclic symmetry, dihedral symmetry, patterns, and applications of symmetry in real-world careers. The depth of mathematical analysis stretches from upper elementary through college. The Activity Book (co-authored by Lois Edwards) contains lessons and blackline masters for teaching a two-week high school course on symmetry. The step-by-step tools better enable students to develop their spatial skills for recognizing, analyzing, and generating symmetry.

A single Mac/Win hybrid CD-ROM costs $59.95; a five-pack costs $149.95; and a 10-pack costs $199.95. Key Curriculum Press, 1150 65th Street, Emeryville, CA 94608; 800.995.6284; www.keypress.com

PrintMusic!
SmartMusic Studio

Click for a larger
screenshot.Coda Music Technology (makers of Finale) have produced two new music programs—PrintMusic! and SmartMusic Studio. Both products deserve close examination to see if they will meet any of your needs for teaching music or for students practicing music at home.

PrintMusic! is designed for creating and printing sheet music. Don’t be limited to entering music note-by-note using a mouse; imagine playing on a keyboard with a MIDI interface and having the notes written to sheet music instantly. A music file can be transposed to accommodate other ranges and different instruments. The Windows CD-ROM costs $69.95 and comes with more than 100 samples of popular holiday, traditional, classical, and children’s music.

SmartMusic Studio listens to musicians sing or play brass or woodwind instruments and follows their spontaneous tempo changes. The program can be used to teach ear training and beat recognition. Students can select a difficult passage and repeat it in a practice loop as many times as necessary with a slow tempo, speeding up as confidence and skill improve. Single version costs $99.95; specify Macintosh or Windows. Coda Music Technology, 6210 Bury Drive, Eden Prairie, MN 55346-1718; 800.843.2066 or 612.937.9611; www.codamusic.com

Word Parts

Click for a larger
screenshot.Get ready for some multisyllabic words (although my spelling checker prefers to call them big words). Word Parts is the newest title from the Tenth Planet Explores Literacy series and provides activities for first- through third-grade students to divide multisyllabic words into manageable units such as syllables, simple morphemes, and common sequences of letters and sounds. The Wordtones are a trio of singers who introduce the key literacy concepts in videos. As students solve problems and create words by combining smaller words and word parts, those words are saved in their Word Bank and can be used in later activities, such as the one in the picture. Consistent with Tenth Planet’s other products is the excellent Teaching Guide, which contains suggestions for assessment, blackline masters, and tips from teachers who have used the program with their students. A single copy of the Mac/Win CD-ROM costs $79.95—the same as the lab pack of 10. For all the Tenth Planet titles contact Sunburst Communications, 101 Castleton Street, Pleasantville, NY 10570-3498; 914.747.3310 or 800.321.7511; www.SUNBURST.com

TeLL me More Pro

Whether you teach French, Spanish, German, Italian, or English as a second language, there is a version of TeLL me More Pro that may help you in the classroom. Using speech recognition, a Windows computer becomes a private tutor. Students practice selecting the right word, picture/word association, word order, grammar, and pronunciation. The videos are designed for oral comprehension and are followed by multiple-choice comprehension exercises. The bilingual dictionary is available to help students with translations. Auralog, 3333 East Camelback, Suite 250, Phoenix, AZ 85018; 888.388.3535 or 602.957.3535; www.auralog.com

KartaNarrator

Think of all the scenarios where you will be making a PowerPoint presentation and will need to repeat the performance. Type your presentation under the option called Speaker Notes. Then use KartaNarrator to select an animated narrator to recite your script. The text bubble can be turned on, so you have instant closed captioned text. Some good news is that audio files stay small and can be easily edited. For price and more information on this Windows product contact Karta Technologies, 1892 Grandstand Dr., San Antonio, TX 78238; 210.681.9102; www.karta.com

Mapmaker’s Toolkit

Click for a larger
screenshot.Having electronic maps adds to student reports and teacher presentations. Having electronic maps and drawing tools for individualizing those maps makes Tom Snyder Productions' new Mapmaker's Toolkit a nice addition to any social studies or history software collection. The software's library contains more than 450 maps, of which 125 are historical maps. The 48 theme maps cover precipitation, temperature, land use, population density, and vegetation on six continents. I particularly like a feature called “layers.” You can choose which of the physical and political features you want printed on the map, such as boundaries, rivers, latitude and longitude lines, and country names. A good source of information on current world and national events is www.tomsnyder.com/classroom/mapmaker. Don’t let all the social studies talk keep you from thinking about using the $79.95 Mapmaker’s Toolkit when teaching literature or science. Tom Snyder Productions, 80 Coolidge Hill Rd., Watertown, MA 02472-5003; 800.342.0236, 617.926.6000; www.tomsnyder.com
