Software Tools: Strategies of Successful Technology Integrators, Part 2

Lynn McNally (lmcnally@pen.k12.va.us), a technology resource teacher with Virginia’s Loudoun County Public Schools, has worked in staff development and tech integration support for the past six years. She is a member of the board of directors of the Virginia Society for Technology in Education (VSTE), an ISTE Affiliate. In 1998, she was named an Apple Distinguished Educator. Lynn teaches a graduate class on technology integration at Shenandoah University, has written curriculum for the Discovery Channel’s School Page, and recently served as an advisor to America Online’s new AOL@School.

Cindy Etchison (cetchiso@loudoun.k12.va.us) is a technology resource specialist for Loudoun County Public Schools. She works with 40 technology resource teachers (TRTs) to promote the site-based and districtwide instructional technology program. As a resource specialist, she provides training for the TRTs and assists them in helping teachers to teach with technology. Mrs. Etchison has worked as a TRT, a computer systems analyst, and a teacher of preschool handicapped students.

Online to Learn or In Line with Standards? An Illusory Dilemma

Judi Harris (judi.harris@mail.utexas.edu), associate professor in curriculum and instruction and area coordinator for Instructional Technology at the University of Texas at Austin, directs the Electronic Emissary (http://emissary.ots.utexas.edu/emissary). She has authored more than 150 articles and four books, most recently the 1998 books Virtual Architecture: Designing and Directing Curriculum-Based Telecomputing (published by ISTE) and Design Tools for the Internet-Supported Classroom (published by ASCD).

Girls Take Charge of Technology

Kiley Hartshorn is an eighth grader at Washington Middle School in Olympia. She is taking an advanced technology course in the mornings (Gen Did), in which she works with teachers at her school and community members. She is active in sports, playing both soccer and basketball. In her spare time, she likes to surf the Web, make cards on the computer, and even create multimedia presentations. Make Sweet Music with Electronic Portfolios

Duane Duxbury (dduxbury@everett.wednet.edu) is a teacher of music technology and fine arts at Henry M. Jackson High School in the Everett (Washington) School District. The music program has established a unique project-based curriculum in music technology, theory, and production. Duxbury is a leader in the state of Washington in developing Web-based collaborative curriculum tools that integrate the Washington State Essential Academic Learning Requirements. Duxbury currently serves as Music Technology Chairperson for the Washington Music Educators Association and is a Smart Tools Academy Faculty Member for the Gates Learning Foundation. Duxbury holds BA, BM, and MEd degrees from the University of Washington.

A Work in Progress

Mary McNabb (mmcnabb@ncrel.org) is a senior program associate for the North Central Regional Educational Laboratory in Oak Brook, Illinois. Her work focuses on helping educators use technology effectively in their educational practices. She recently served on the leadership committee developing ISTE’s NETS for Teachers, a project funded by the PT3 grant program. In 1996, she earned a doctorate in educational technology and a master’s of science in educational psychology from Northern Illinois University. While teaching at several institutions of higher education, she infused technology into her reading, writing, and preservice education courses.

Engaging Students with Data

Cliff Konold (konold@srri.umass.edu) is a research associate professor at the Scientific Reasoning Research Institute, University of Massachusetts, Amherst. His current research focuses on understanding and improving students’ abilities to reason about data. With funding from the National Science Foundation, he is heading a team building data-analysis software for middle school students. The tool, Tinkerplots, is structured like a construction set, permitting students to create their own types of plots and analyses.

Bob Coulter (bob.coulter@mobot.org) is director of Mapping the Environment, a program at the Missouri Botanical Garden’s Litzsinger Road Ecology Center that supports teachers’ efforts to enhance their science curriculum through use of the Internet and geographic information systems (GIS) software. He is also president-elect of the Math Educators of Greater St. Louis. Previously, Bob taught elementary grades for 12 years.
