The Handheld Computer as Field Guide

Mapping Applications
Mobile Mapquest: www.mapquest.com—Mobile Mapquest is a free online resource for maps that work similarly to Mapquest for desktop machines. You can download maps to wired or wireless handhelds.

TerraServer: www.terraserver.com—TerraServer is a site for satellite imagery from more than 60 countries. Their goal is complete coverage of the earth’s surface, so that every search results in an image to view. Images are available in a JPEG file format or in a print form. A one-year subscription costs $139.95 and includes higher-resolution, more-detailed images than the free images provided.

MapTap Atlas: www.mobilegeographics.com/maptap—Mobile Geographics LLC provides specialized mapping and navigation software for handheld computers. MapTap is a handheld atlas, reference, and map education tool for PalmOS.

Checklists or Surveys
SurveyMate: www.thinkdb.com—SurveyMate is an electronic questionnaire/quiz system that costs $19.95. It allows you to gather information, count it, chart it, and compile the results in three different formats.

Databases
MobileDB: www.handmark.com/support/mobiledb—MobileDB is database software for viewing and editing any list, table, or spreadsheet-like information on a PalmOS or Pocket PC device. The price is $19.99 for PalmOS only and $29.99 for MobileDB with MobileDB-Excel or MobileDB with MobileDB-Access for Pocket PC or PalmOS.

FileMaker MobileDB: www.filemaker.com/products/mbl_home.html—Pair FileMaker Mobile with FileMaker Pro to get the portability of a handheld and the power of a desktop database. You can load information from your single-user, non-relational FileMaker Pro databases onto your PalmOS handheld device. View, enter, and modify data on the go, then later synchronize data on desktop and handheld. Cost: $49.

ThinkDB: www.thinkingbytes.com—ThinkDB can be used to access important information when away from the classroom.

Counting Applications
Count It: www.palmspot.com/software/detail/ps4244a_98104.html—Count It has up to 120 customizable counters with running totals and an audible alarm. The hardware buttons control each counter. You can calculate the number of counts/time, which can be used in behavior analysis or any place where you are interested in calculating a count per time. The ability to save a counting session into a set enables you to capture multiple data sets in the field for later analysis. This could be for statistical work such as traffic counting. The conversion utility makes it easy to convert data to CSV format for import into spreadsheets or databases.

Drawing and Photography Tools
DrawIt: www.freewarepalm.com/graphics/drawit.html—A freeware multi-page drawing program for a color Palm. Use it as a notepad or a drawing tool, and export the images with the beta version of DrawIt Bitmap Exporter for Windows from the Web site.

TealPaint: www.tealpoint.com/softpnt.htm—TealPaint is a paint and sketch program on PalmOS handhelds. Features include color and grayscale support, text, magnified draw, 16 drawing tools, 16 patterns, 12 brushes, horizontal and vertical scrolling, animation, programmable buttons, image compression, grid snap, image templates, background locking, screen-grab tool, and more. Also included is a desktop image import, export, and printing utility. Cost: $17.95.

BugMe!: www.bugme.net/bugme—BugMe! for Pocket PC and PalmOS lets you jot quick notes, make a quick sketch, or draw a map. It captures what you draw directly on your Palm-powered handheld’s screen, making note taking fast, easy, and accurate. BugMe! has full color support, and you can change the pen style and color. The free PopMe! tool allows you to use any screen on your handheld as a BugMe! note, and then you can set an alarm with a visual reminder. Cost: $19.95.

eNature: www.enature.com—eNature has free online field guides. The online field guide Web pages have lots of ads from other companies and for products sold by eNature.

Decision-Tree Models
What-If Builder: (desktops) http://csf.concord.org/esf/Software.cfm; (handhelds) www.kidsolve.com—The What-If Builder is a tool that enables students to create decision-tree models, also known as action mazes, tree literature, plot branching, or choose your own adventure.
