Ben Smith — PK–12 Schools Representative
Ben Smith has been a physics teacher at Red Lion Area High School, located in south central Pennsylvania, USA, for the past 22 years. He is certified in physics and math. In addition to teaching honors physics, AP Physics, and engineering, Smith serves as the Science Department chair. He is also the technology resource teacher assisting with technology-related professional development in the district.
Ben has a bachelor’s degree in physics from Lebanon Valley College (Pennsylvania) and a master’s degree in teaching and curriculum from Penn State University. He is currently working on his doctoral degree in instructional technology from Towson University (Maryland, USA).
Ben was identified as a Keystone Educator in Pennsylvania for outstanding integration of technology into his teaching. He attended the invitational statewide Keystone Summit in 2005 and returned as an instructor to the in 2007. He has also been identified as a Star Educator by Discovery. Ben has earned a number of competitive grants, including the Olin Flinchbaugh Charitable Trust and Best Buy Te@ch Award.
Ben has served as a consultant to ISTE as well as a number of school districts throughout the United States. In this role, he has worked with the Singapore Ministry of Education and the U.S. Virgin Islands Ministry of Education to prepare technology coaches and integrate technology. He runs an education technology consulting business called EdTechInnovators (www.edtechinnovators.com) with Jared Mader. Together, Smith and Mader have presented across the United States on topics of technology integration, science education, and 21st century education in venues such as the Discovery Science Connection Summit, Society for Information Technology & Teacher Education (SITE) Research Conference, Blendschools.net Conference, National Science Teachers Association (NSTA) National Conference, Penn State University Literacy Conference, and ISTE's annual conference and exhibition, where they were named Best of the Best in both 2008 and 2009. Smith and Mader serve as the Science Curriculum Specialists for Learning and Leading with Technology (L&L), ISTE’s member magazine. Smith has also written online algebra and geometry curriculum for Blendedschools.net.
