Stephen Rainwater — Computer Science Representative

Dr. Stephen Rainwater is Chandler Professor of Computer Science at the University of Texas at Tyler, Texas, USA. His professional career spans 35 years as a computer science and mathematics educator at the high school, community college, and university levels (he has spent the last 30 years as a faculty member at UT Tyler). Over the course of this time, he has taught 35 undergraduate and 15 graduate courses. His research interest has focused primarily on the effectiveness of using low- to no-cost software tools and techniques for teaching concepts in computer science.
In addition to serving as the computer science representative on the ISTE Board of Directors from 2007 to 2009, Stephen's professional leadership has included service as president of the Texas Computer Education Association, president of the East Texas Council of Teachers of Mathematics, and mathematics section chair of the Texas Academy of Science. From 2009 to 2011, he served as president of ISTE’s Special Interest Group for Computing Teachers (SIGCT). His ISTE service has included the Accreditation and Standards Committee, Finance Committee, and Editorial Review Board of the Journal for Computing Teachers. His other professional organization affiliations include the Association for Computing Machinery, ACM's Special Interest Group for Computer Science Education, Computer Science Teachers Association, American Society for Engineering Education, and Phi Delta Kappa.
At UT Tyler, he has served as president of the faculty senate and director of an NSF-funded undergraduate research program that endeavors to increase the number of students from underrepresented groups pursuing careers and graduate studies in STEM disciplines. Stephen was recognized with the University of Texas system Chancellor’s Council Outstanding Teaching Award in 2006, was the UT Tyler nominee in 1990 for the Minnie Stevens Piper Professor Award, has been selected by students of the Alpha Chi honor society as outstanding professor seven times, and was awarded Distinguished Life Membership by the Texas Computer Education Association. In 2011, he was recipient of the President’s Volunteer Service Award for his work on behalf of computing education.
Dr. Rainwater earned a doctorate in education from Texas A&M University-Commerce as well as graduate degrees in computer science and mathematics. His dissertation researched the predictive effects of community college student characteristics on academic achievement in computer science at the university level.
