ISTE Announces Public Policy Advocate and Trendsetter Awards
Washington, D.C. — The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) has recognized Becky Fisher with the Public Policy Advocate Award and Michael Walker with the Public Policy Trendsetter Award. The award honors individuals who are outstanding leaders and mentors in advocating for education technology policy at the local, state, regional, national and/or international level.

Becky Fisher is currently the director of educational technology and professional development for Albemarle Public School District in Charlottesville, Virginia.  She has also served as a board member of the Virginia Society for Technology in Education, one of ISTE’s 75+ affiliate organizations. A dedicated advocate for technology in education, Fisher worked with the Virginia state legislature to require instructional technology coaches in each school division in the state. Judges cited the broad impact of Fisher’s work as well as her passion for making an active grass-roots organization “stronger and better.”  She continues to be an advocate through her work with VSTE and other educational organizations, most recently bringing VSTE and ASCD together to work on issues related to Internet safety and social networking software.

Recognized as the Public Policy Trendsetter of the Year, Mike Walker is the technology integration specialist for Edina Public Schools, in Edina, Minnesota. Walker has spearheaded key initiatives within his school district that expand learning opportunities through technology, develop skills to compete in a global society, raise science scores, and maximize district resources. He was cited for “effectively using the power of social networking” through his blog and Twitter to spread the word about key national issues such as funding.

Fisher will receive complementary travel to ISTE’s annual conference and exposition, ISTE 2011, in Philadelphia, PA, June 26-29, 2011, as well as registration, a commemorative plaque, and one year ISTE membership. Walker will be presented with an award certificate at ISTE 2011.
