“Personalized Learning: A Guide for Engaging Students With Technology” Explores Ways to Meet the Needs of All Learners
WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 30, 2014 – Today’s technology, from immersive learning technologies to mobile devices, unleashes endless possibilities for personalizing learning. Yet, many teachers struggle to develop instructional strategies to make those possibilities a reality. Today at ISTE 2014, the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®), unveiled a new book, Personalized Learning: A Guide for Engaging Students with Technology, designed to guide educators as they leverage technology to personalize learning for all students.
Co-authors Peggy Grant, Ph.D., and Dale Basye demonstrate how personalized learning with technology can be used to meet the needs of all learners—from gifted students to students with disabilities—and how it can help achieve school goals.
Underwritten with support from Intel® Education, Personalized Learning features examples of what learning looks like at different grade levels and learners when the unique needs of students drive the process. The book also examines how personalization of learning activities helps meet Common Core and ISTE Standards. Readers will discover a helpful comparison of tools and technologies as well as criteria for choosing devices. The book’s hands-on planning and evaluation tools provide a great resource for teachers and administrators, individuals and entire school districts. The book concludes with a step-by-step guide for planning a school-wide personalized learning initiative.
Each of the authors brings a unique perspective on ways to engage students with technology. After 21 years as an award-winning junior high English and reading teacher, Grant left the classroom to pursue a doctorate in literacy education. He then moved to the Chicago area where she taught at Purdue University Calumet for seven years and then worked as a literacy consultant with Learning Point Associates. Grant writes educational content for the Web and for online and face-to-face training in project-based-learning and technology integration. She has conducted numerous state, regional, national and international presentations and workshops on literacy, assessment, higher-order thinking and 21st century skills. She has also developed and facilitated long-term professional development for classroom teachers in urban, rural and suburban school environments.
Basye is an award-winning writer, author and creative director with more than 20 years of professional experience in journalism and advertising. His specialty is creating dynamic and relevant multimedia experiences for children, working with Quaker, Nestle, Lucasfilm, the Oregon Department of Health, Lego, Portland Public Schools, Mattel, the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department and Portland State University to develop and implement a number of programs and campaigns for young people.
