Each year I wrack my brain trying to think of a cool new tool I can share at the EduBloggerCon Web 2.0 Tools Smackdown. Although I do use many different social media tools in my teaching, they tend to be the more banal offerings of the Web 2.0 world and no one needs me to talk for three minutes on Facebook, Skype or Twitter.
Even though I don’t have the guts to stand at the front of the room, this is always the moment when I feel like the ISTE conference has officially begun. I left today’s session with mental overload as my brain buzzed with thoughts of how I could use these new tools in my classroom.
Here are a few of my favorites from today’s Web 2.0 smackdown, click here.
UJAM: Sing into you computer’s built in microphone and the program will add the music style and instruments of your choice. It’s like karaoke except with original vocals.
Stencyl: A free program to create simple games in Flash without needing extensive programming knowledge. Coming soon – the ability to build original iPhone apps and distributed them.
Screenr: This tool makes it incredibly easy to record a screen cast. Nothing to download, works with Mac and PCs and the products use Java so the results will play on most smartphones. I plan to use this to create videos that show students how to use new media tools. That way, I won’t need to use valuable class time walking student through setting up a blog or creating a Twitter account.
AnswerGarden: Ask simple questions (no login necessary) and share, export or embed to collect answers from friends and contact. The answers come back as a word cloud with the most popular responses showing up as the largest.
LucidChart: I’m constantly looking for tools to help keep me organized. This web-based program offers a platform to build collaborative flowcharts. As an added bonus, educators receive a free Pro account!
Bo.lt: Input any webpage URL and the program will provide a unique URL for an editable copy of that page. Looks like an interesting tool to introduce students to very basic web design.
Tildee: Search for video tutorials for just about everything. Don’t see a tutorial for the topic you want? Create one using the free web tool. My favorite example of a Tildee tutorial: How to Remove Permanent Marker from Whiteboard.
Skloog: I think I’m going to make Skloog my homepage. It’s a way to organize bookmarks and favorite websites and is much more visually appealing than my bookmarks dropdown menu.
Shapeways: Want to spark creativity in your students? Shapeways allows students to create products or pieces of art and their 3D printing service will turn them into real objects. Budding entrepreneurs can even sell their creations in Shapeways online store.
What’s your favorite Web 2.0 tool?
