SIGMS: Media Specialist Special Interest Group

SIGMS provides a community for school library media specialists to gather and learn about technologies that improve the operation and programs of the school library media center, increase access to information, and create a more effective and efficient teaching and learning environment.

SIGMS Advocacy Efforts

The Media Specialists Special Interest Group (SIGMS) released an important advocacy statement, The Role of School Librarians in Promoting the Use of Educational Technologies to provide information on the role school librarians play in promoting the use of educational technologies in their schools and the need for libraries to have available technologies.

The Role of School Librarians in Promoting the Use of Educational Technologies

The statement was created by the SIGMS Executive Advocacy Committee: Lisa Perez, Doug Johnson, Joyce Valenza, Keisa Williams, Wendy Stephens and Ernie Cox. Learn and Lead

SIGMS fosters communication among library media specialists, promotes the school library media program, represents school library media specialists in ISTE activities and with other SIGs, and provides opportunities for leadership and professional development for school library media specialists. There are many opportunities to get involved with SIGMS including contributing to the group newsletter, helping to organize professional development activities such as webinar or book discussions or simply attending events in Second Life and share your views and experiences with others.

SIGMS also hosts ISTE’s Technology Innovation Award honoring teams of a school librarian and a collaborating teacher who have conducted an exemplary technology program extending beyond the library to meet the needs of classroom students and teachers.
