WASHINGTON, D.C. – June 23, 2014 – The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE®) today announced that the new book from flipped learning pioneers Jon Bergmann and Aaron Sams will debut at ISTE 2014, June 28-July 1, in Atlanta. In Flipped Learning: Gateway to Student Engagement, co-authors Bergmann and Sams take their revolutionary education philosophy to the next level. Building on the energy of the thousands of educators inspired by ISTE’s bestselling Flip Your Classroom: Reach Every Student in Every Class Every Day, this new book is all about what happens next —when a classroom is truly student-centered and teachers are free to engage with students on an individual level.

Flipped Learning is loaded with powerful stories from teachers across curriculum and grade levels, as well as technology coordinators and professional learning specialists who share how they were able to go deeper into content, let students’ curiosity take learning further and develop positive relationships.

In a May 2014 article for ISTE’s Learning and Leading with Technology publication, Bergmann and Sams explain that a growing subculture of flipped learning teachers are using the extra time in class for their students to explore their passions. They devote 10-20 percent of class time to allowing students to learn more about topics of interest. In this new book, Bergman and Sams explain how teachers can give students the freedom to learn more about what interests them and, at the same time, hold them accountable for results.

They conclude, “Flipped learning is proving to be a gateway for teachers to move to deeper strategies and transform their classrooms into dynamic, interactive learning environments where the educator’s role is to guide students as they apply concepts and engage creatively in the subject matter.”

A former classroom teacher, Bergmann is now chief learning officer at TurnAbout Learning. He received the Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching in 2002, and was named a semi-finalist for Colorado Teacher of the Year in 2010.  Bergmann serves on the advisory board of TED Education, and hosts “The Flip Side,” a radio show which tells the stories of flipped educators. Additionally, he is a founding board member and the treasurer of the Flipped Learning Network, the only not-for-profit organization run by and for flipped educators.

An educator since 2000, Sams is also a founding member of the Flipped Learning Network. He is an adjunct instructor at Saint Vincent College, director of digital learning at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Pittsburgh and an advisor to TED-Ed. Previously, he was a chemistry teacher at Woodland Park High School in Colorado. He was awarded the 2009 Presidential Award for Excellence in Math and Science Teaching and served as co-chair of the Colorado State Science Standards Revision Committee. He frequently speaks and conducts workshops on educational uses of screencasts and the flipped classroom concept.
