ARLINGTON, Virginia — ISTE CEO Richard Culatta issued the following statement on the results of the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development's Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) 2018 results that were released earlier today.
"The 2018 PISA results show positive signs that more students in OECD countries are gaining access to technology and tools that improve learning environments and close equity gaps,” said Richard Culatta, ISTE’s CEO. “However, it is alarming that fewer than 1 in 10 OECD students are able to distinguish between fact and opinion. The future of healthy democracies depends on well-informed students who are committed to using technology to improve communities. As educators, parents and citizens, we have an obligation to raise the importance and urgency of digital citizenship."
The 2018 PISA results and the accompanying PISA 2018: Insights and Interpretations point to a need to refocus on the importance of digital citizenship. The report’s summary describes a "post-truth" climate where “the speed, volume and reach of information flows in the current digital ecosystem have created the perfect conditions for fake news to thrive, affecting public opinion and political choices.” The OECD’s summary says, "Today, [students] will find hundreds of thousands of answers to their questions online, and it is up to them to figure out what is true and what is false, what is right and what is wrong."
Earlier this year, ISTE joined a diverse coalition of tech, education and media organizations in creating the Digital Citizenship Commitment Campaign (DigCitCommit) with a goal of redefining digital citizenship and addressing the problems mentioned in the OECD’s PISA summary report. Rather than highlighting what not to do, DigCitCommit is refocusing the conversation around five competencies: inclusive, informed, engaged, balanced and alert. Learn more at DigCitCommit.org.
