We live in a participatory culture. Citizens
around the globe create media, influence the stream of communication, and
manipulate our attention to issues and events. This brave new world requires
today’s students to develop a whole new skill set that includes new media
literacies as well as cultural, social, critical-thinking, evaluation and
analytical skills. The ISTE Standards can help spark students’ learning of and
engagement with these new skills, and the Common Core weaves them throughout its
standards. This interactive session will approach the ISTE Standards as
blueprints to achieve and engage the Common Core and will explore online and
offline activities with a focus on new literacies and scaffolding
activities.
